Tilak was considered a radical Nationalist but a Social conservative. Before Gandhi, he was the most widely known Indian political leader.
Tilak joined the Indian National Congress in 1890. He was one of the most-eminent radicals at the time. Tilak helped found the All India Home Rule League in 1916–18, with G. S. Khaparde and Annie Besant.
