The Gir National Park is famous worldwide for being the only abode of the Asiatic Lion. Gir was notified as wildlife sanctuary on 18th September, 1965 in order to conserve the Asiatic Lion. It covers total area of 1412 square kilometers of which 258 Km forms the core area of the National Park.
The vegetation at Gir National Park consists of teak, sal (Shorea robusta), dhak (Butea frondosa), and thorn forests. Other than Asiatic Lion, the fauna at Gir National Park includes leopards, wild pigs, spotted deer, nilgai (a type of antelope), four-horned antelope, and chinkaras (a type of gazelle).
