El Nino and La Nina – IAS Synopsis
Excerpt/ Sample:
El Niño is the name given to a climate pattern which brings unusual warming of surface water of the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. El Niño is a Spanish word meaning “the little boy”, it also means Christ Child, and is used to describe this climate pattern because it often occurs around Christmas.
During an El Niño event, westward-blowing trade winds weaken along the Equator. These changes in air pressure and wind speed cause warm surface water to move eastward along the Equator, from the western Pacific to the coast of northern South America.
