Depositional landforms by river – IAS Synopsis
Excerpt/ Sample:
Three major types of landforms are formed due to depositional activity of river, these are – alluvial fans cones, natural levees and deltas.
1. Alluvial Fans and Cones
An alluvial fan is a triangle-shaped deposit of gravel, sand, and smaller materials called alluvium. These are usually created as flowing water of a river interacts with mountains or hills. The rushing water carries alluvium to a flat plain, where the stream leaves its channel to spread out. Alluvium is deposited as the stream fans out, creating a triangle-shaped alluvial fan. Alluvial cones, are basically alluvial fans with steep slopes.
