The Bhakti movement was an important religious movement of India, that reached its zenith between the 15th and 17th century CE. The Bhakti movement was characterized by the principles of monotheism or oneness of God, and deep devotion and faith in God.

The Bhakti movement originated in South India during the seventh to eighth century CE and then it spread northwards from Tamil Nadu through Karnataka. It gained wide acceptance in fifteenth-century Assam, Bengal and northern India.
